The Atlanta Marathon starts and finishes at Turner Field Stadium (26.2 miles) ... while the Half-Marathon (13.1 miles) goes straight down Peachtree Road through Downtown Atlanta and makes its way to Turner Field. With over 6,000 Runners participating, the Atlanta Marathon makes a 'great excuse' to Get-Away for a couple of days. Holiday Shopping Specials abound, while Hotel Prices remain very reasonable. The Carolinas' Thanksgiving Day Parade, a tradition since 1947, is one of the largest get-togethers of Carolinians that takes place during the year. It boasts participation from both Carolinas and touches approximately half a million people from the 22-county metro area. The parade is presented by the Carolinas' Carrousel, Inc., a non-profit organization that recognizes many talented young people for their achievements and talents through its scholarship programs. This year, the magical Saturday procession, with Mickey Mouse again as the grand marshal, will reach a nationwide TV audience through ABC's live syndicated broadcast co-hosted by Robin Roberts of "Good Morning America." As Mickey and other Disney characters wave to the tens of thousands of spectators, more than one million lights illuminate the 200 trees along Michigan Avenue between Oak Street and the Chicago River. Santa Claus makes an appearance on his sleigh, blasting snow flurries along the way. The procession culminates in fireworks by the river. Gobble Gait started as a small race to raise some additional money for the Hastings Family Service.11 years later, they are still raising money to benefit Hastings Family Service, but it is no longer a small race.  With over 1900 runners last year and over 150 sponsors from around the community, Gobblegait has raised over $285,000 for Hasitngs Family Service.  They have reached their goal each year, and strive to reach their goal of $70,000  for 2008.   These funds are used by Hastings Family Service to buy food, clothing and offer assistance to families in need of these basic necessities. The spectacular one-hour parade features decorated illuminated floats with celebrities, bands and lavishly-costumed participants. The theme for the parade is a Theatrical Christmas.
