This Association is a non-profit, non-partisan, and nonpolitical organization that may not be used as a vehicle for any social, commercial or political purpose. It is staffed entirely by conscientious volunteer members of the local community with the goal of promoting the celebration of USA’s Independence Day via a parade. You may refer to our “Theme” and “Dedication” areas of our web site for more information regarding the history of the parade. The parade is an annual event and consists of generally 150 entries. The number of spectators over the years has ranged from of 5,000 to 70,000. Parade entries include marching bands to exotic automobiles, military color guards to clowns, and dignitaries to unique presentations. Of course, the parade has a distinguished assortment of floats. Some floats are professionally built, but many are the proud results of individual ingenuity by local organizations and businesses. There is even an Award Ceremony after the parade at Fielder Museum at 1 pm to recognize excellence within each of several categories. Plano Independence Day Parade

Saturday, July 4, 2009
9:00 a.m. start time

It was fun for the whole community.
Early participants were Boy and Girl Scout troops, and neighborhood associations. There were lawnmower and lawn chair brigades. The Plano BPW traditionally marched a briefcase brigade. Parents marched pulling their children in decorated wagons and other children rode their bicycles, decorated with crepe paper and American flags. A local church passed out water to participants marching along in the blistering July Texas sun. For several years parade participants and other hungry folks gathered after the parade for a chicken dinner.

“There were very few business and corporate sponsors back then,” says Sandy Tysseland of PT&G in Plano. She got involved in 1986. She relates, “At that time about 20 BPW members and volunteers organized the parade, raised money, arranged for judging and awarded trophies,” in much of the same way that the parade is organized today. It still follows the same route from Plano High School, north on Independence to the church on Spring Creek Parkway. The parade grew until the membership was no longer able to manage it and the expenses involved. By the late ‘90s the high cost of liability insurance and the need for police assistance were factors which forced the Plano BPW to discontinue sponsorship of the parade, although many of them have continued to remain involved.

Parade Route: Independence Parkway, starting at Plano Senior High School (Park) going north to Spring Creek Parkway, ending at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.

MACY'S 33rd ANNUAL FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR

July 4, 2009

Fire and water come together in an amazing display on the East River between 23rd and 42nd street involving four barges, more than 20,000 aerial shells and special effects, the New York Fire Department shooting red, clear and blue water 300 feet over the river and Macy's specially recorded musical accompaniment available on 1010 WINS AM. Titled "Voices of Liberty," the 25th anniversary of Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular promises to be an incredible evening for the whole family.

There are several ways to participate:

Manhattan: Spectators can view the display from the FDR drive between 14th and 42nd street. Pedestrian access ramps are located at 23rd, 38th, and 42nd streets, and will be open from 7:30pm until 10pm. Because of this, FDR will be closed to motorists between Houston and 63rd street from 7pm until 1am.

Brooklyn and Queens: Enjoy the display in Brooklyn and Queens from anywhere with an unobstructed view of 23rd through 42nd street, such as Hunter's Point, Queens or Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Watercraft: If you prefer to be on the water, your vessel must remain south of the Williamsburg Bridge on the north of the southernmost tip of the Roosevelt Bridge in Newton Creek. For further information, contact Macy's Marine Hotline at (212) 494-5247.

Television: If you can't make it down to the City, you can take part in the celebration with NBC's national broadcast of the Fireworks Spectacular.

For more information, call Macy's Hotline at (212) 494 - 5247.

NYC's 4th of July fireworks @ The Hudson River

"To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage to what would become New York, the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks this year will move to the Hudson River, Macy's has announced.

The SOUSA fireworks will be set off from six barges in the river positioned between 24th and 50th streets for a 26-minute show featuring approximately 40,000 shells and a live score including "Proud Mary" and "God Bless America" played by the New York Pops.

"The Hudson River is where Macy's 4th of July Fireworks was born," Robin Hall, executive producer of Macy's Fireworks said in a statement announcing the move from the East River. "We're excited to return this year to be part of New York City's larger celebration of the 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage of discovery aboard the Dutch vessel, The Half Moon." [Newyorkology]

I think that means no view from Brooklyn this year. :(

Also on July 4th: Conor Oberst and Jenny Lewis play a free show in Battery Park.
